League of Legends MSI Journey
League of Legends MSI Live Experience: An Immersive Esports Adventure
Setting Out on the Journey: Pre-Tournament Anticipation and Excitement
For a gamer who has loved esports since childhood, attending the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) in person felt like fulfilling a pilgrimage. For this expedition, my gear was kept to a minimum: a smartphone to capture the moments, a high-capacity power bank, and a handwritten cheer sign filled with conviction. Outside the venue, we joined many like-minded fans in displaying our handwritten cheer signs; the “SHANKS” and “AL” team logos we held aloft were the colors of our faith.

My friends and I took a group photo outside the venue, holding up our handwritten signs, our eyes brimming with anticipation.
Design Reflection: To help readers who haven’t experienced esports events firsthand intuitively feel the excitement of the venue, I applied the Multimedia Principle. By combining textual descriptions with on-site photos of my friends and me holding our signs, I avoided the monotony of text alone and helped readers visualize the scene in their minds.
Crossing the Threshold: The Moment of Entry
Since the venue was crowded, I lightened the load in my backpack as much as possible to prevent theft and maintain mobility. As the line slowly moved forward—through ticket checks and security screenings—the moment I stepped inside the venue, the outside commotion was instantly replaced by the deafening music and dazzling lights inside. That sense of transition from the real world into the esports battlefield sent my adrenaline soaring.
Design Reflection: This paragraph remains purely descriptive, emphasizing this psychological sense of transition. I avoided inserting excessive visual distractions here to set the stage for the upcoming climax.
The Climax: The Match’s Highlight Moments
The match officially begins! To ensure the most immersive viewing experience possible, I only took out my phone to record at specific moments and during breaks. The venue was filled with the cheers of the audience, the commentator’s passionate commentary, and the thunderous sound effects.
Design Reflection: When editing this video footage, I strictly adhered to the Coherence Principle. I deliberately retained the original audio to recreate the authentic on-site atmosphere; viewers can hear the cheers of the entire audience in the video. However, in terms of editing, I selected only the most crucial highlights: the camera pans across the matchup information displayed on the big screen, quickly sweeps through the audience waving glowing cheer sticks, and finally cuts back to the stage. I eliminated all lengthy, repetitive, or redundant shots to avoid cognitive overload caused by excessive visual clutter.
After the Frenzy: Post-Match Interviews and Group Photos
The end of the match didn’t mean the excitement faded. The post-match player interviews were just as thrilling. I had planned my route in advance, hoping to catch my favorite player after the game. Sure enough, my wish came true—I successfully spotted Flandre from Team AL and snapped a precious photo with him. This was not only the perfect conclusion to my MSI trip but also my most cherished memento as a fan.

My wish came true—I successfully waited for AL’s Flandre and took a photo with him.
Design Reflection: Following the Spatial Contiguity Principle, I placed the specific photo right next to the relevant text paragraph. This way, readers can see the corresponding image immediately while reading the text, without having to scroll to the end of the article to find it, effectively reducing the cognitive load during reading.
Conclusion and Reflection on Challenges
When conceptualizing this multimedia story, my biggest challenge was figuring out how to convey the excitement of esports to classmates who had never watched a match before, while ensuring I didn’t miss any thrilling moments during the game.
My strategy was to create a streamlined shooting plan and strictly apply Meyer’s multimedia instructional principles during post-production. By collecting footage at specific moments and applying structured narrative, multimedia principles, the principle of continuity, and the principle of spatial proximity, I not only managed the complexity of the information and ensured the final story was concise and impactful, but also allowed myself to fully enjoy this MSI journey. I hope this account helps you experience the unique charm of League of Legends esports!
